Düsseldorf, 29 November 2023 | The commercial law firm SNP Schlawien has advised the German Red Cross, Mülheim an der Ruhr district association, on the construction of a new day care centre for children in the ‘Forum City Mülheim’ shopping centre. The client is Commerz Real AG.
The shopping centre, built between 1970 and 1976 by architect Hanns-Hennig Lautz in the centre of Mülheim an der Ruhr, adjoins a dense residential development with four 20-storey high-rise buildings and a multi-storey car park. It is also connected to the main railway station via a passageway.
The DRK kindergarten ‘Die Rettungsfüchse’, which took around three years to plan and one year to build, covers several hundred square metres on the ground floor of the complex. A further 800 square metres will be added to the outdoor area with a variety of play equipment. In the long term, 15 children under the age of three and 60 children over the age of three will be looked after there.
Commerz Real is repositioning the entire ‘Forum City Mülheim’ shopping centre. To this end, the first floor and the basement, which together account for 14,500 square metres of the total rental space of around 52,000 square metres, will be extensively renovated by the end of 2023. These areas will then be available for health, therapeutic and care services under the name ‘Forum Medikum’. According to the centre management of the Forum, the placement of a daycare centre under the roof of a shopping centre is unique in Germany, as is its vision of combining childcare and medical care alongside shopping, local retail and gastronomy.
